Using fallen trees that in most cases are over 250
years old we have created an exclusive collection of beautiful furniture
that is not only a joy to look at but practical as well.
The trees we use for the collection are ones that have fallen in recent storms or have been damaged as a result of high winds.
Having
been a cabinet maker for over 30 years Patrick sees the huge
potential in fallen & strom-damaged trees and in the past 6 years he's undergone a journey of discovery to
find a way of removing, planking and drying the wood with the least
impact on the environment.
In the following pages you'll find out how he achieved just that and why Forest 2 Furniture is so unique.
Selecting the tree.......
Using the fallen and damaged trees is a way of naturally managing the existing woodland.
The trees we use have NOT been grown specifically to supply the furniture industry.
Having chosen and agreed a price with the woodland owners for the tree we wish to use, the next step is to clear away unwanted branches before we can decide where the trunk needs to be cut for best results.
In the first photo it would appear that there are two trees that need clearing but as we remove the branches and brambles it soon becomes clear that there are more, in total, five trees have fallen in this area and each one will have to be made safe before milling starts.
For a change these trees have fallen close to the main road meaning extraction of the milled planks should be easier. But we will have to work fast, as spring turns to summer the brambles will grow back and make moving and working in this area both difficult and dangerous.
